Indoor air quality is an important consideration on every major construction project. The EPA does recommend low Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) paints and coatings but no federal standard or regulation is in place mandating specific VOC limitations.

The document emerging as the preferred indoor air quality standard is the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) Specification 01350 Standard practice for the testing of volatile organic emissions from various sources using small-scale environmental chambers.

What makes this document different is that it addresses testing, exposure modeling and allowable limits for modeled indoor air concentrations at 14 days, based on the chemicals of concern listed by Cal-EPA, notably, VOC’s and chemicals with established Chronic Reference Exposure Levels or (CRELs).

A variety of other product certification programs have adopted or adapted the CDPH 01350 Standard Practice; these include the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED), Indoor Environmental Quality Criteria; the National Green Building Standard; Green Label Plus (GLP); Scientific Certification Systems (SCS) Indoor Advantage Gold; Resilient Floor Covering Institute (RFCI) FloorScore; and GREENGUARD

Even though this is a California Standard, it has been adopted by over 1/3 of all the states as a required certification for products used in that states schools, offices and hospital’s

Crossfield Products Corp. has taken a leadership role in ensuring our products are certified environmentally safe, as tested using criteria that is specifically for evaluating potential chronic health risks from inhalation exposures of vapor phase organic chemicals emitted by the products covered within the scope of the Standard
